Why Hamilton trusts us with suspension & shock repairs
-
Workshop, not a fit-only bay
We diagnose which corner is actually worn on the hoist before quoting, so you pay to fix the fault, not to swap parts on a hunch.
-
Diagnosis before replacement
Every corner is flex-tested and inspected, weeping shocks, tired bushes and worn mounts are found before they turn into a bigger repair.
-
Suspension, WOF and brakes together
Suspension repairs, a Warrant of Fitness and brake work can be handled in the same visit, with no second booking somewhere else.
-
Cars, utes, 4WD and light commercial
Passenger cars, work utes, 4WDs and light commercial vans all get the same hoist inspection and honest assessment of what needs doing.
-
MTA workshop on Kahikatea Drive
Twenty-plus years of mechanical work in Frankton, held to MTA workmanship and dispute-resolution standards on every job.
Simple, transparent process
- 01
Book and describe
Call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form and tell us what you feel, nose-diving, a clunk, a bouncy ride or uneven tyre wear. That points us to the likely corner before the vehicle arrives.
- 02
Inspect and flex-test
The vehicle goes on the hoist and each corner is flex-tested and inspected. We check shocks, struts, springs, bushes, mounts, ball joints and wheel bearings, and note anything worn.
- 03
Quote and confirm
We explain what is worn, what can wait and what needs doing now, then quote it in writing. Nothing gets done without your sign-off.
- 04
Repair and road test
Worn parts are replaced, torqued to specification, and the vehicle is road tested. Where new shocks or worn parts call for it, we flag a wheel alignment before you leave.
Everything you should know about suspension & shock repairs
A workshop perspective on what's involved, how we run the job, and what shapes the final cost.
Why suspension repairs in Hamilton need a proper workshop
Your suspension keeps the tyres pressed to the road, and the shock absorbers control that movement so the car stays settled under braking, cornering and load. When shocks lose their damping, the vehicle floats and dives, tyres wear unevenly, and your stopping distance grows. Worn suspension can also fail a Warrant of Fitness.
The trouble with suspension is that the symptom rarely tells you which part is worn. A clunk over a speed bump might be a sway bar link, a perished bush, a tired strut mount or a worn ball joint. A bouncy ride might be a leaking shock, or it might be a broken coil. Guessing means replacing parts that were fine and leaving the real fault in the car. A full workshop puts the vehicle on the hoist, flex-tests each corner, and finds the actual cause before quoting a repair.
What our suspension and shock repair work covers
We repair suspension on passenger cars, utes, 4WDs and light commercial vehicles, from a single worn shock through to a full front-end refresh. Every job starts with a hoist inspection so the quote is based on what is actually worn.
Shocks and struts:
- Shock absorbers and strut assemblies checked for oil leaks, weeping and lost damping
- Each corner flex-tested to confirm the damper is still controlling the spring
- Strut top mounts and bearings checked for knocks, seizing and play
- Shocks replaced in axle pairs where damping has dropped on one side, to keep the ride even
Springs and bushes:
- Coil and leaf springs inspected for sag, cracks and broken coils
- Control arm, sway bar and subframe bushes checked for perishing and movement
- Sway bar links inspected for the knocks and rattles they cause over bumps
Steering and related wear:
- Ball joints and tie rod ends checked for free play
- Wheel bearings checked for roughness and looseness
- Steering rack and link condition assessed against WOF suspension and steering criteria
Because a worn suspension component often shows up first as strange tyre wear, we read the wear pattern too. Cupping usually points to a tired strut or damaged mount, while edge wear points to alignment. Where new struts or worn parts have disturbed the geometry, we flag a wheel alignment before you leave rather than sending you off on fresh work that will scrub a tyre.
Signs your suspension or shocks need attention
Suspension wears in gradually, so the change often creeps up on you until you drive a fresh vehicle and feel the difference. These are the signs worth booking an inspection for:
- Nose-diving under braking: the front dips hard when you brake, which is a classic sign the front shocks have lost their damping and stopping distance is growing
- A bouncy or floaty ride: the car keeps rebounding after a bump or dip instead of settling in one movement, the standard bounce test for worn shocks
- Clunks and knocks over bumps: a knock over speed bumps or rough seal usually points to a worn sway bar link, a perished bush, a tired strut mount or a ball joint
- Uneven or cupped tyre wear: scalloped, cupped wear across the tread is one of the earliest signs of tired dampers or worn mounts, long before the ride feels wrong
- Wandering or vague steering: the vehicle drifts and needs constant correction at open-road speed, or feels unsettled through corners
- Visible oil on the shock body: a shock weeping oil down its body has lost its seal and its damping
How do you know for sure which part is at fault? You often cannot from the driver's seat, which is why a hoist inspection and flex-test matter. Can you keep driving on bad shocks in the meantime? It is not safe to, worn dampers lengthen your braking distance, unsettle the car in corners, chew through tyres, and can fail a Warrant of Fitness. If you have noticed any of the signs above, it is worth getting it looked at rather than waiting for the WOF to catch it.
How a suspension repair job works at our Frankton workshop
Call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form and tell us what you are feeling, whether it is nose-diving under brakes, a clunk over bumps, a floaty ride or uneven tyre wear. That description points us to the likely corner before your vehicle even arrives, so we can plan the inspection.
On the day, the vehicle goes onto the hoist and every corner is flex-tested and inspected. We check shocks, struts, springs, bushes, mounts, ball joints, sway bar links and wheel bearings, and note anything worn or on its way out. If we find something outside what you booked for, we call you with the fix and an estimate first. Nothing gets done without your sign-off.
Once the work is agreed, worn parts are replaced and torqued to manufacturer specification, and the vehicle is road tested to confirm the ride and handling are back to where they should be. You leave with a written report of what was done, what we saw, and anything worth planning in for next time.
What suspension and shock repairs cost
We quote every suspension job individually, after the hoist inspection, and confirm the price with you before any work starts. There are no hidden surcharges, and we do not publish a flat rate because the cost depends heavily on your vehicle and what is actually worn. A single rear shock on a small hatch and a pair of front struts on a loaded ute are very different jobs. The main factors are:
- Shocks or full struts: a bolt-in shock is quicker than a strut assembly that also carries the spring
- Parts grade: budget, mid-range and premium dampers all exist, and the right choice depends on how the vehicle is used
- Extent of wear: bushes, mounts, ball joints or links found worn during inspection add to the job
- Vehicle type: 4WDs, utes and light commercials carry heavier, more involved components than a small passenger car
- Alignment: where new struts disturb the geometry, a wheel alignment is a separate step
Across New Zealand, replacing shock absorbers typically costs between $350 and $1,400 for a pair fitted, though the exact price depends on your vehicle and the extent of the work. For an accurate quote for your vehicle, call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form.
Hamilton and Waikato coverage
Our workshop is on Kahikatea Drive in Frankton, a short drive from Hillcrest, Rototuna, Te Rapa, Chartwell and the rest of Hamilton. Suspension work comes to us from right across the Waikato, work utes from Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Morrinsville that pound gravel and farm tracks, family wagons from Huntly and Ngaruawahia, and 4WDs heading toward Raglan and the coast, where rough seal and potholes are hard on shocks and bushes.
Fleet and light commercial operators book suspension checks alongside servicing so a tired damper is caught before it fails a WOF or scrubs out a set of tyres. The workshop is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, and we are happy to arrange a morning drop-off so your vehicle can go straight up on the hoist.

Common Questions
Everything you might want to know before booking.
What do shock absorbers do?
Shock absorbers, or dampers, control the movement of your springs so the tyres stay planted on the road instead of bouncing. They steady the car under braking, cornering and over bumps. Worn shocks let the vehicle float and dive, which lengthens stopping distance and wears tyres unevenly.
How do I know if my shock absorber is bad?
The common signs are nose-diving under braking, a bouncy or floaty ride, a clunk or knock over bumps, uneven or cupped tyre wear, and steering that wanders at open-road speed. Oil weeping down the body of the shock is another clear sign. A flex-test on the hoist confirms which corner has lost its damping.
Can I drive a car with bad shocks?
It is not safe to keep driving on badly worn shocks. Damping loss lengthens your braking distance, makes the car unstable in corners and on bumps, and wears tyres faster. Worn suspension can also fail a Warrant of Fitness. If the ride has gone bouncy or vague, book an inspection rather than putting it off.
How much does it cost to replace shock absorbers in New Zealand?
Across New Zealand, replacing shock absorbers typically costs between $350 and $1,400 for a pair fitted, though the exact price depends on your vehicle, whether it needs shocks or full struts, and the extent of the work. For an accurate quote for your vehicle, get in touch with our team on (07) 847 3339.
Do I need a wheel alignment after replacing shocks?
Often, yes. Replacing struts usually disturbs suspension geometry, so an alignment afterwards protects your new tyres and keeps the steering true. Replacing rear shocks on some vehicles may not need one. We will tell you honestly whether an alignment is needed before you leave.
Will worn suspension fail a WOF?
It can. A WOF inspection checks shock absorbers, springs, bushes, ball joints and mounts, and excessive wear, a leaking shock or broken spring is a fail. Because we run WOF inspections and suspension repairs under one roof, anything that comes up can be quoted and fixed in the same visit.
Do you offer WINZ-approved quotes on suspension repairs?
Yes. We are a WINZ-approved workshop and can provide formal written quotes you can submit to Work and Income if a suspension repair is creating financial pressure. Call (07) 847 3339 and we will put it together with you.
