Why Choose Us

Why Hamilton trusts us with tyre replacement & balancing

Workshop, not just a tyre shop

We see your brakes, suspension and wheel bearings while the wheels are off, most tyre-only shops miss faults a mechanical workshop catches.

Precision dynamic balancing

Calibrated balancer set to manufacturer weight tolerance, not a quick eyeball-and-stick job. Smoother ride, less tread wear, steady steering.

Cars, utes, 4WD and light commercial

Passenger, all-terrain, mud-terrain and light commercial truck tyres fitted under one roof for owner-drivers and fleet operators.

Honest brand advice

Budget, mid-range and premium tyres recommended on your real-world use, we will not upsell a touring tyre to a farm ute.

MTA workshop on Kahikatea Drive

Twenty-plus years of mechanical work behind every tyre fit, with WOF, servicing and brake work available in the same visit.

How It Works

Simple, transparent process

  1. 01

    Inspect and measure

Tread depth is measured across inner, centre and outer bands. Sidewalls, valves and wear patterns are checked, and tyre age is read off the date code.

  2. 02

    Recommend and quote

We match the right tyre to your vehicle, load and driving use across budget, mid-range and premium tiers, then quote in writing before any work starts.

  3. 03

    Fit and balance

Tyres are mounted on a modern changer with no rim damage, fitted to factory direction, and each wheel is dynamically balanced on calibrated equipment.

  4. 04

    Torque and final check

Wheel nuts torqued to manufacturer spec, pressures set to placard, TPMS reset if fitted, and a short road test confirms a vibration-free ride.

Everything you should know about tyre replacement & balancing

A workshop perspective on what's involved, how we run the job, and what shapes the final cost.

Why tyre replacement in Hamilton needs a workshop, not just a fitting bay

Hamilton drivers cover a real mix of surfaces, open-road State Highway 1, coarse-chip suburban seal, gravel toward Whatawhata and Te Kowhai, and wet Waikato winters that put every tread block to work. Tyres at 1.5 mm tread might be legal, but they are not the same tyre that left the factory in the wet. Aquaplaning starts well above the legal minimum, and braking distance on a wet Hamilton intersection grows fast as tread drops.

Worn or unevenly worn tyres almost always tell you something a tyre-only shop won't pick up:

  • Edge wear means alignment
  • Cupping means a tired strut or wheel bearing
  • Vibration at 100 km/h might be a wheel weight, a buckled rim or a CV joint on its way out

A mechanical workshop sees all of that with the wheels off.

What our tyre replacement and balancing work covers

We fit passenger car, 4WD, SUV and light commercial truck tyres across the brands stocked for New Zealand conditions: Bridgestone, Michelin, Continental, Dunlop, Goodyear, Hankook, Maxxis, Kumho, Yokohama and BFGoodrich.

Before fitting:

  • Tread measured across inner, centre and outer bands with a calibrated depth gauge
  • Sidewalls checked for cracking, bulges and impact damage
  • Date code read to confirm tyre age, six years is the practical age limit regardless of tread; rubber hardens

Fitting and balancing:

  • Old tyres demounted on a modern changer designed to protect alloy rim edges
  • New tyres fitted to the manufacturer's direction and rotation pattern
  • Rubber valve stems renewed on every fit
  • Each wheel dynamically balanced on a calibrated balancer to factory weight tolerance
  • Wheel nuts torqued to manufacturer specification with a calibrated torque wrench, not a rattle gun on full speed
  • Pressures set to the door-placard figure; TPMS reset where fitted

Because we are a mechanical workshop, brakes, discs, suspension bushes, CV boots and wheel bearings get a visual inspection while the wheels are off. If alignment work is needed, we flag it before fitting new rubber, not after.

How a tyre replacement job works at our Frankton workshop

Call (07) 847 3339, tell us the vehicle, the tyre size off the sidewall and what you use the car for. We quote two or three options across budget, mid-range and premium, book you in, and order the tyres if they are not in stock.

On the day, the vehicle goes onto a hoist, all four wheels come off, and tread, sidewalls and date codes are checked. Brakes, bearings and suspension get a quick visual at the same time. Old tyres are demounted, new tyres mounted with fresh valve stems, and each wheel is dynamically balanced. Wheels go back on torqued to manufacturer specification, pressures set to the placard, TPMS reset where fitted, and a short road test confirms no residual vibration.

You get a clear summary at hand-over of anything else we saw (a marginal brake pad, a leaking shock, a torn CV boot) with no pressure to do that work on the spot.

What affects the cost

Tyre work has more cost variables than most people expect, and we quote each one specifically:

  • Tyre size and load rating: a 15-inch passenger tyre and a 33-inch all-terrain are in different price worlds
  • Brand tier: budget, mid-range and premium all exist for genuine reasons; the right tier depends on how the vehicle is used
  • Speed rating and load index: these matter for utes, vans and tow vehicles, and we will not undersize on either
  • Truck tyre labour: light commercial truck tyres take longer because of bead stiffness
  • TPMS: sensor relearn adds a small step on equipped vehicles
  • Wheel alignment: where needed, this is separate from the tyre job

Old tyre disposal is included in our pricing, no surprise fee at the end. For a written quote, call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form.

Hamilton and Waikato coverage

Our workshop is on Kahikatea Drive in Frankton, a short drive from Hillcrest, Rototuna, Te Rapa, Chartwell and Glenview. Most tyre work comes from Hamilton city drivers, but a steady share comes from across the Waikato, utes from Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Morrinsville, family wagons from Huntly and Ngaruawahia, and 4WDs heading toward Raglan and the west coast.

Fleet operators with vans and light trucks book sets in advance so we can hold stock. The workshop is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, and we will tell you up front whether the tyre is on the shelf or coming in overnight.

FAQs

Common Questions

Everything you might want to know before booking.

What is the legal minimum tyre tread depth in New Zealand?

New Zealand law requires at least 1.5 mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way around. We recommend replacing closer to 3 mm. Below 3 mm, wet-weather braking distance and aquaplaning resistance drop off sharply, and tread blocks lose the stability they need on coarse-chip seal.

When should I replace my tyres?

Replace when tread approaches 3 mm, when you see cracking, bulges or impact damage on the sidewall, or when the tyre is over six years from its date code regardless of wear. Uneven wear across the tread can mean alignment, suspension or inflation issues that need fixing alongside the replacement.

How often should I balance my tyres?

Every wheel gets balanced when a new tyre is fitted. After that, any steering or seat vibration that comes on between roughly 90 and 110 km/h is the usual sign a wheel needs re-balancing. Some drivers also have wheels re-balanced halfway through tyre life, especially on bigger alloys.

How long does a tyre change and balance take?

A set of four passenger tyres including dynamic balancing usually takes 45 to 90 minutes once the vehicle is on the hoist. Light commercial and 4WD tyres can take longer because of bead stiffness and weight. Single replacements are quicker. Booking ahead gives us time to source the tyre.

Do I need a wheel alignment when I fit new tyres?

Not always. If the old tyres wore evenly, the car tracked straight, and the steering wheel was centred, alignment is usually fine. If you saw edge wear, a steering pull or a crooked wheel, we will flag alignment work before fitting new tyres, putting new rubber on a misaligned car wastes the tread.

What is the difference between wheel balancing and wheel alignment?

Balancing distributes weight evenly around the wheel and tyre so it spins smoothly, fixes vibration. Alignment sets the angles the wheels sit at relative to the road and each other, fixes pulling and uneven wear. They are different procedures done on different equipment, both important.

Why does my steering wheel vibrate at open-road speed?

The usual cause is an out-of-balance wheel, often because a wheel weight has fallen off. Other causes are a buckled rim from a pothole hit, an internally damaged tyre, a worn wheel bearing or a worn CV joint. With the wheels off for a re-balance, we can see which of those is at play.

Can I replace just one tyre or do I have to do them all?

You can replace one or two if the remaining tyres still have plenty of tread and match the new tyre's size, speed rating and load index. On 4WDs and AWDs, manufacturer guidance often calls for axle-pair or full-set replacement to keep drivetrain wear even. We will tell you what your vehicle needs.

How long do tyres last on New Zealand roads?

Most passenger tyres last 40,000 to 60,000 km on Waikato roads, depending on driving style, alignment, pressures and tyre quality. Light commercials, utes and 4WDs vary more, particularly on gravel and off-road use. Tyres should also be replaced after six years even if tread looks fine, rubber hardens with age.

Do you fit 4WD and light commercial truck tyres?

Yes. All-terrains, mud-terrains and light commercial tyres for utes, vans and small trucks are a regular part of our work. We hold the right equipment to bead-seat stiff truck sidewalls without damaging the rim, and we balance bigger wheels on the same calibrated balancer.

Are cheaper tyres safe?

Most legally sold tyres in New Zealand meet basic safety standards, but the gap shows in wet braking, noise, tread life and cornering grip. We stock budget, mid-range and premium tyres and will explain the trade-offs honestly. For a high-mileage ute or a family car that lives in the rain, mid-range is usually the smartest spend.

Do you offer WINZ-approved quotes on tyre replacement?

Yes. We are a WINZ-approved workshop and can provide formal written quotes you can submit to Work and Income if a full tyre replacement is creating financial pressure. Call (07) 847 3339 and we will put it together with you.
