Why Choose Us

Why Hamilton trusts us with transmission servicing

  • Automatic and CVT specialists

Modern automatics and CVTs are precision units that need the right fluid and the right procedure. We service both, matched to what your gearbox was built for rather than a one-size fluid.

  • Right fluid, every time

The wrong transmission fluid can cause shudder and long-term damage on its own. We use the manufacturer-specified grade for your exact vehicle, and we tell you which one it is.

  • Diagnose before we drain

A shift complaint is not always the fluid. We scan the transmission control module and road test first, so you are not paying for a service that was never going to fix the fault.

  • Fluid work under one roof

Transmission servicing sits alongside oil changes, WOF and diesel work at the same workshop, so a service and a fluid change can usually be handled in one visit.

  • Twenty years on Kahikatea Drive

Same Frankton workshop, same team, over twenty years of mechanical work on petrol, diesel and fleet vehicles across the Waikato.

How It Works

Simple, transparent process

  1. 01

    Book and describe

Call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form and tell us the symptoms, or that you simply want a preventative fluid service. We book the vehicle in and confirm the fluid your gearbox needs before you arrive.

  2. 02

    Scan and inspect

The scan tool comes out first to read any transmission fault codes and live data, and we check fluid level, colour and smell against the manufacturer specification. A short road test confirms how the gearbox is shifting.

  3. 03

    Drain-and-fill or full flush

Depending on the fluid condition and the manufacturer schedule, we either drain and refill or run a complete fluid exchange. CVTs are serviced with their specific fluid, never a generic substitute.

  4. 04

    Filter and pan

Where the transmission has a serviceable pan and filter, the pan comes off, the filter is replaced, the magnets are checked for debris, and the gasket is renewed before refilling to the correct level.

  5. 05

    Road test and report

We set the fluid to level at the specified temperature, road test to confirm smooth engagement and clean shifts, and hand back a written report on fluid condition and your next recommended interval.

Everything you should know about transmission servicing

A workshop perspective on what's involved, how we run the job, and what shapes the final cost.

Why transmission servicing needs a specialist

A transmission is one of the most expensive assemblies in your vehicle, and it is also one of the most sensitive to the fluid inside it. Modern automatics and CVTs are built to fine tolerances, run hot, and rely on the fluid being both the right grade and in good condition. Use the wrong fluid, or leave old fluid in too long, and you can create the exact shudder, slip and hesitation that a service is meant to prevent.

That is why fluid servicing is not a job for guesswork or a generic bottle off the shelf. Each gearbox has a specific fluid it was designed for, a specific procedure to fill it to the correct level, and its own fault behaviour when something is wrong. Filling a modern automatic to the right level is a temperature-controlled process, not a dipstick top-up, and getting it wrong can cause the very symptoms you were trying to fix. We service transmissions the way the manufacturer intended, and we scan and road test first so the work actually addresses the problem.

Warning signs your transmission needs attention

Most transmission trouble gives you notice before it becomes a breakdown. The earlier a fluid service or a scan happens, the more likely the fix stays simple. Watch for:

  • Shuddering or juddering through the driveline during gentle acceleration
  • Slipping, where the engine revs rise but the vehicle does not pull as it should
  • Delayed or harsh engagement when you shift into drive or reverse
  • Gears hunting, hesitating or changing at the wrong point
  • A burnt or acrid smell from the transmission fluid
  • A transmission or check-engine warning light on the dash

Any one of these on an automatic or a CVT is worth a look. Some are simply tired fluid, which a service resolves. Others point to a fault in the control system or internal wear, which we would rather find on the scan tool than let you drive into a larger repair.

What our transmission servicing covers

Transmission work at our Frankton workshop starts with diagnosis and ends with a road test, not just a fluid swap.

Diagnosis first:

  • Fault-code scan of the transmission control module with manufacturer-level scan tools
  • Live data check of transmission operating temperature and shift behaviour
  • Fluid level, colour and smell assessed against the manufacturer specification
  • A short road test to feel how the gearbox engages and shifts under real conditions

Automatic fluid servicing: For a conventional automatic, we drain and refill with the correct OEM-grade fluid, or run a complete fluid exchange where the condition and the manufacturer schedule call for it. Where the transmission has a serviceable pan, the pan comes off, the internal filter is replaced, the magnets are checked for clutch material and metal debris, and the gasket is renewed before refilling to the correct level.

CVT fluid servicing: CVTs are serviced with the exact CVT fluid the unit is rated for, never a generic substitute, because the wrong fluid is a known cause of shudder and internal damage in these gearboxes. CVTs run their fluid hard, and many drivers are told the fill is lifetime when in practice the fluid still degrades with heat and mileage. The fluid condition and fault codes are checked as part of the same job, and we confirm the correct fill procedure and level for your specific model rather than treating every CVT the same.

Vehicles we regularly service the transmission on include:

  • Toyota and Lexus automatics and CVTs
  • Nissan and Subaru CVTs
  • Hilux, Ranger, BT-50 and Triton ute automatics
  • Vans, motorhomes and light commercial automatics

If the scan or the pan inspection points to internal wear or a mechanical fault rather than tired fluid, we explain what we have found and talk you through your gearbox repair or replacement options before any further work is agreed. Nothing beyond the agreed service happens without your sign-off.

How a transmission service works at our Frankton workshop

You phone (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form and tell us what you are noticing, or simply that you want a preventative fluid service. We confirm the fluid your gearbox needs and book a slot, and we give you a realistic timeframe when you book.

On the day, the scan tool comes out first for fault codes and live data, and we assess the fluid level, colour and smell against the manufacturer specification. A short road test tells us how the gearbox is actually shifting. If the fluid is due, we drain and refill or run a full exchange, replace the filter and gasket where the design allows, and set the fluid to level at the specified temperature.

If the readings suggest the cause is a control-system fault or internal wear rather than the fluid, we surface that before doing the service, so you are not paying for fluid work that was never going to fix it. Either way, you collect the vehicle with a written report covering the fluid condition, anything we found, and the interval we recommend for next time.

What transmission servicing costs in New Zealand

We quote every transmission job individually, and we confirm the cost with you before any work starts. What it comes to depends on your gearbox type, how much fluid it holds, the grade of fluid it needs, and whether a straight drain-and-fill or a full flush is the right approach.

  • Fluid type - a CVT or a modern automatic on a specialised OEM fluid costs more than an older automatic on a common grade
  • Service method - a drain-and-fill uses less fluid than a full exchange, which flushes nearly all of the old fluid through the cooler circuit
  • Fluid capacity - a large ute or motorhome automatic holds far more fluid than a small hatchback
  • Filter and gasket - transmissions with a serviceable pan and internal filter add parts and labour that a sealed unit does not

Across New Zealand, an automatic transmission fluid service typically costs between $250 and $600, and a CVT service often sits a little higher because of the specialised fluid, though the exact price depends on your vehicle and the extent of the work. For an accurate quote for your vehicle, call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form.

Hamilton and Waikato coverage

Our workshop sits on Kahikatea Drive in Frankton, a few minutes from the Hamilton ring road. Transmission servicing work comes in from right across the wider Waikato: family automatics and CVTs from Hillcrest, Rototuna, Te Rapa and Chartwell, utes and light commercials from Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Morrinsville, and fleet and towing vehicles from Huntly, Ngaruawahia and out toward Raglan.

We will give you a realistic timeframe when you book. Where a scan points to a repair beyond the service, we confirm the timing and your options before going ahead. The workshop is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

FAQs

Common Questions

Everything you might want to know before booking.

How often should you service an automatic transmission?

It depends on the vehicle and how it is driven, but as a general guide most automatics benefit from a fluid service every 60,000 to 100,000 kilometres, and sooner for vehicles that tow, carry heavy loads or sit in stop-start traffic. Some manufacturers call fluid lifetime fill, which in practice still degrades with heat. Check your handbook, or call us and we will confirm the right interval for your vehicle.

What is the difference between a transmission flush and a drain-and-fill?

A drain-and-fill removes the fluid that sits in the pan and replaces it, which is usually a portion of the total fluid. A full flush exchanges nearly all of the old fluid through the cooler circuit for fresh fluid. A flush is more thorough, but the right choice depends on your gearbox, the fluid condition and the manufacturer guidance. We advise which suits your vehicle after the inspection.

Do CVT transmissions need servicing?

Yes. CVTs are sensitive to fluid condition and must use the exact CVT fluid they are rated for, as the wrong fluid can cause shudder and internal damage. We service CVTs with the correct fluid and check the fluid condition and fault codes as part of the job. Regular CVT fluid servicing is one of the best ways to protect the unit.

What are the signs your transmission needs servicing?

Common signs are shuddering or juddering during acceleration, slipping where the engine revs climb without matching speed, delayed or harsh engagement when you select drive or reverse, gears hunting or hesitating, and a burnt smell from the fluid. A transmission warning light is another. Any of these are worth a scan and fluid check before they turn into a larger repair.

How much does a transmission service cost in New Zealand?

Across New Zealand, an automatic transmission fluid service typically costs between $250 and $600, and a CVT service often sits a little higher because of the specialised fluid, though the exact price depends on your vehicle, fluid capacity and whether a drain-and-fill or a full flush is needed. For an accurate quote for your vehicle, call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form.

What happens if you never change your transmission fluid?

Old fluid loses its lubricating and hydraulic properties, runs hotter, and carries clutch material and debris through the gearbox. Over time that accelerates wear on clutches, bearings and the valve body, and can turn a routine fluid service into a major repair or replacement. Regular servicing is far cheaper than the alternative, which is why we recommend keeping to a sensible interval.

Do you offer WINZ-approved quotes on transmission work?

Yes. We are a WINZ-approved workshop and can provide formal written quotes you can submit to Work and Income if a larger transmission repair is creating financial pressure. Call (07) 847 3339 and we will put the quote together with you.
