Everything you should know about vehicle servicing & wof
A workshop perspective on what's involved, how we run the job, and what shapes the final cost.
Why combine your WOF and service at one Hamilton workshop?
Most Hamilton drivers end up booking the WOF and the annual service separately, then making a second trip back when something on the WOF needs rectifying. We run both jobs in the same building, so the inspection, the service and any repairs flow into one visit. That matters when you only have one vehicle and a working day already spoken for.
Our workshop is on Kahikatea Drive in Frankton, two minutes from the Hamilton ring road, with off-street parking and a waiting area for quick jobs. The team is the same people you spoke to last year, and that continuity is half of why a workshop earns the relationship.
What our WOF and servicing work covers
Warrant of Fitness:
The WOF inspection follows the NZTA Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual on every job:
- Tyres and wheels, brakes, structure and chassis
- Lights and indicators, glazing and wipers
- Doors, seatbelts and airbags
- Steering and suspension
- Exhaust integrity and fuel system
- Speedometer
We use calibrated equipment for brake testing, headlight aim and exhaust inspection, and photograph anything we flag so the report has evidence rather than just a tick-box.
Full vehicle service:
A service goes well beyond the WOF. Engine oil is drained and replaced with the correct OEM specification: a low-SAPS oil for a modern diesel with a DPF, Toyota TGMO 0W-20 for a recent petrol car, or a fully synthetic 5W-40 for a turbocharged petrol. The oil filter is replaced and the sump plug washer renewed. Brake fluid, coolant, power steering and transmission fluid are checked and topped. Air filter, cabin filter and fuel filter are inspected. The brakes get a wheels-off inspection so pad wear and disc condition are measured properly.
The diagnostic scan reads fault codes and live data across engine, transmission and ABS, useful for catching a drifting coolant temperature sensor before it becomes a no-start morning. Fleet servicing comes with per-vehicle logging and monthly compliance reporting for Waikato businesses.
How a WOF and service visit works at our Frankton workshop
Phone (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form to lock in a morning drop-off. Combined service-plus-WOF visits need a full day; pure WOF jobs are usually about an hour.
On the day, you hand over the key at reception and we run through the work scope before you leave. The vehicle goes onto a hoist, service items are completed against the manufacturer specification, and the WOF inspection runs through the NZTA criteria. If we find something that needs your call (a worn front pad, a perished wiper, a slow exhaust leak) we ring you with the fix and an estimate. Nothing extra happens until you sign off. When the work is done, the vehicle is road-tested and you collect with a written report. Most combined jobs are back in the customer's hands the same afternoon.
What affects the cost
We quote each WOF and service upfront, but the final figure varies with a few honest factors:
- Oil: a Toyota Prado needing six litres of low-SAPS 5W-30 costs more than a Suzuki Swift on 3.2 litres; diesel oil spec tends to sit higher than petrol
- Filters: an OEM cabin filter for a recent Lexus is roughly twice the price of an aftermarket part for an older Toyota
- WOF repairs: parts dominate on brake discs and exhaust components; labour dominates on wiper arms and seatbelt retractors
- Engine bay access: larger engines and tighter engine bays take more labour hours to reach filters and components

Common Questions
Everything you might want to know before booking.
How much does a WOF cost in Hamilton?
Pricing varies with workshop, vehicle type and whether any items need rectifying on the day. We quote the inspection upfront and walk you through any repair costs before doing the work. Call (07) 847 3339 for our current WOF inspection rate.
How often do I need a WOF in NZ?
Vehicles first registered on or after 1 January 2000 need a WOF every twelve months. Older vehicles need a WOF every six months. The expiry date is printed on the label on your windscreen and your next-due date is also on your WOF certificate.
How long does a WOF take?
A WOF inspection on a passenger vehicle is usually 30 to 60 minutes. If you have booked a full vehicle service at the same visit, expect a half-day to a full day depending on the scope. Drop-off in the morning is the most common pattern.
What happens if my vehicle fails the WOF?
We give you a written list of the fail items, quote the repair, and once you approve we usually rectify on the same visit. You have 28 days from the original inspection to come back for a free recheck. Driving a failed vehicle on the road is restricted to going home, to the workshop, or to where it will be stored.
What is checked in a WOF?
The NZTA WOF covers tyres, brakes, structure and chassis, lights, glazing, windscreen wipers and washers, doors, seatbelts, airbags, steering and suspension, exhaust, fuel system and speedometer. Emissions are checked visually. The full NZTA criteria are followed on every inspection.
Can you do my service and WOF in the same visit?
Yes, and it is the most efficient way to handle both. Drop the vehicle off in the morning, we run the service plus the WOF inspection together, and you collect later that day with a single report. Book by phone so we can allocate a long enough slot.
How often should I service my car?
Most modern vehicles need a full service every twelve months or 10,000 km, whichever comes first. Diesels, towing vehicles, and short-trip city cars often benefit from a shorter service interval. Your owner's manual has the manufacturer interval, if you are not sure, bring it in and we will recommend a schedule.
What is the difference between a WOF and a service?
A WOF is a compliance inspection, does the vehicle meet the legal road-safety standard. A service is preventative maintenance, we change oil and filters, top fluids, inspect wear items, and scan for faults so problems do not turn into breakdowns. The two cover different things and most drivers do both each year.
Do you service all makes and models?
Yes. We service petrol and diesel vehicles across every common make and model, from small passenger cars to utes, vans and light commercials. Our technicians work with manufacturer specifications for each vehicle, so the oil grade, filters and service items are matched to your exact make, model, year and engine.
Can you handle fleet servicing for our business?
Yes. We service light commercial fleets across the Waikato, utes, vans, light trucks and small buses, with per-vehicle service logs, scheduled compliance dates, and monthly reporting. Call to discuss a service plan that fits your fleet size.
Do I need a booking, or can I just drop in?
Bookings are best so we can guarantee a slot and the right technician. WOF-only jobs we can sometimes fit in same-day if you call in the morning. For service work or anything diesel-specific, book ahead by a few days.
Do you offer WINZ-approved quotes?
Yes. We are a WINZ-approved workshop and can provide formal written quotes you can submit to Work and Income for assistance with repair costs.
