Everything you should know about new vehicle logbook servicing

A workshop perspective on what's involved, how we run the job, and what shapes the final cost.

Do you have to return to the dealer to keep your new-car warranty?

No. This is the single most common misunderstanding new vehicle owners bring into the workshop. The Consumer Guarantees Act protects your right to choose where the work is done. A logbook service keeps the manufacturer warranty fully intact when:

  • It follows the manufacturer's published schedule
  • It uses oils that meet the manufacturer specification
  • The correct genuine or OEM-equivalent parts are fitted
  • The service book is stamped

Hamilton drivers come to our Frankton workshop for exactly this reason: the same warranty-compliant logbook service without the dealer markup.

What our logbook servicing covers

A logbook service is not a generic service. Every manufacturer publishes its own schedule specific to your make, model, year and engine. We pull the correct schedule for your exact vehicle first, so every item due at that interval is identified before work starts.

The service itself covers:

  • Engine oil drained warm, OEM-spec oil filter fitted, sump drain plug washer renewed
  • Refill to the manufacturer-specified viscosity, performance grade and any OEM approval, not a generic substitute
  • Fuel filter inspected and replaced at its interval; water trap drained on diesels
  • Air filter and cabin filter checked and renewed where due
  • Every fluid checked and topped to specification
  • Brakes, suspension, steering, drive belt, exhaust and tyres inspected on the hoist
  • Manufacturer-level diagnostic scan reviewing fault codes across every module
  • Service interval indicator reset; logbook stamped and dated

That stamped record is what protects you if a warranty claim ever arises. The manufacturer will ask to see it. Bring the service book with the vehicle and we work through the exact schedule with you.

How a logbook service works at our Frankton workshop

Phone (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form and bring the service book with the vehicle. Before the booking is locked in, we confirm the manufacturer-specified oil and service parts for your exact make, model, year and engine code, so the right oil and correct parts are on the shelf when you arrive.

Drop the vehicle in the morning. It goes onto the hoist, the oil is drained warm, filters are renewed where due, and the refill is poured to manufacturer-specified capacity. The engine is run to circulate, level rechecked, scheduled inspection completed, and the diagnostic scan run. The service interval indicator is reset, the logbook stamped and dated, and a written report goes with the keys at pickup.

What affects the cost

Logbook servicing doesn't run to a single fixed price because the schedule drives the work:

  • Oil: a long-life synthetic to a specific OEM approval costs noticeably more than a basic grade; engine capacity sets the litre count
  • Scheduled items due: fuel filter, air filter, cabin filter, spark plugs, brake fluid and coolant all rotate at different milestones; a minor-interval service is a smaller job than a major one
  • Vehicle make and model: access and parts cost vary between platforms

Anything found on inspection that needs attention is quoted separately and only done with your approval. For a quote, call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form.

Hamilton and Waikato coverage

Our workshop is on Kahikatea Drive in Frankton, three minutes from the Hamilton ring road. New vehicle owners come from across the wider Waikato:

  • Families with near-new SUVs from Cambridge and Te Awamutu
  • Owner-drivers with new utes from Morrinsville and Huntly
  • Commuters from Ngaruawahia and out toward Raglan

Many customers started on their vehicle's first scheduled service and stayed well beyond the warranty period. One workshop that knows the vehicle and its history is worth keeping. The workshop runs Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

FAQs

Common Questions

Everything you might want to know before booking.

Do I have to get my car serviced at the dealership to keep the warranty in NZ?

No. New Zealand law does not require you to service at the dealer to keep a manufacturer warranty. You can use any qualified workshop. The condition is that the service follows the manufacturer's published schedule, uses oils that meet the manufacturer specification and the correct genuine or OEM-equivalent parts, and is recorded in the logbook. We do exactly that, so your warranty stays fully intact.

Can I service my car without voiding the warranty?

Yes. You can have your vehicle serviced at an independent workshop and still keep the manufacturer warranty. The warranty stays valid as long as the logbook schedule is followed, spec oils and correct parts are used, and the service book is stamped. The Consumer Guarantees Act protects your right to choose where the work is done. We carry out logbook servicing to that standard on every vehicle.

Is the warranty void if not serviced by the dealer?

No. Servicing your vehicle somewhere other than the dealer does not void the manufacturer warranty. The manufacturer can only decline a claim if the required servicing was not carried out, or was not done to specification. As long as the published schedule is followed, the right oils and parts are used, and the logbook is stamped, your cover is intact. That is exactly how we work.

What are the common acts that void a vehicle warranty?

A manufacturer warranty is most often put at risk by missed services, servicing done outside the scheduled interval, using oil that does not meet the manufacturer specification, fitting parts that are not genuine or OEM-equivalent, an unstamped or incomplete service book, or unapproved engine modifications. Damage from neglect or misuse is also excluded. Following the logbook schedule properly, which is what we do, avoids every one of these.

How often do new cars have to be serviced?

Most manufacturers specify a service every twelve months or at a set distance interval, commonly 10,000 to 15,000 km, whichever comes first. The exact interval is in your owner's manual and service book and varies by make and engine. New Zealand conditions, gravel roads, towing and short stop-start trips, can call for a shorter interval. We confirm the correct schedule for your exact vehicle when you book.

What is a logbook service?

A logbook service follows the manufacturer's published maintenance schedule for your exact vehicle, the specific oils, fluids, filters, parts and checks required at each interval to keep the new-car warranty valid. It is not a generic service. Every make has its own schedule. We pull the correct schedule for your make, model, year and engine, complete every listed item, and stamp the logbook so your warranty record is complete.

Will servicing outside the dealer void my warranty in NZ?

No. Having your vehicle serviced at an independent workshop in New Zealand does not void the manufacturer warranty. The protection comes from how the service is done, not where. As long as the manufacturer schedule is followed, spec oils and genuine or OEM-equivalent parts are used, and the logbook is stamped, your warranty stays intact. We carry out logbook servicing to that exact standard.

What oils and parts keep my new-car warranty valid?

Manufacturers require oils that meet their published specification, the correct viscosity, performance grade and any OEM approval, plus service parts that are genuine or OEM-equivalent, fitted at the scheduled interval. Using an off-spec oil or a non-approved part can give the manufacturer grounds to decline a powertrain claim. We use manufacturer-spec oils and the correct parts on every logbook service, and record it all in the service book.

What is the 30-60-90 rule for cars?

The 30-60-90 idea refers to larger maintenance milestones, often at 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 km or miles, where bigger items such as fluids, belts, plugs and major inspections come due alongside the regular service. Your manufacturer logbook lays out exactly which items fall at which milestone. We follow that published schedule, so the bigger interval items are completed when your vehicle reaches them.

How much does a logbook service cost?

Cost depends on a few factors rather than a fixed figure. The biggest is the oil, a long-life synthetic to a specific OEM approval costs more than a basic grade, and engine capacity sets the litre count. Which scheduled parts fall due at that interval also matters, since filters, plugs and fluids rotate at different points. For a quote on your exact vehicle, call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form.

Do you service new vehicles still under manufacturer warranty?

Yes. New and near-new vehicles still inside the manufacturer warranty period are a core part of our servicing work. We follow the published logbook schedule for your exact make, model, year and engine, use manufacturer-spec oils and genuine or OEM-equivalent parts, complete every scheduled item, and stamp the service book. Your warranty stays fully intact, at independent-workshop prices rather than dealer prices.

Should I service my new car at the dealer or an independent workshop?

An independent workshop following the manufacturer schedule, using spec oils and correct parts, and stamping the logbook keeps your warranty record valid and usually costs less than the dealer. The work is done by qualified technicians to the same manufacturer specifications. We have serviced the same Hamilton and Waikato vehicles for the same owners for two decades, so the continuity of one workshop that knows your vehicle adds real value.
