Why Choose Us

Why Hamilton trusts us with dpf cleaning & regeneration

Diagnose first, replace last

Forced regeneration clears most DPF warnings without removing the filter. We confirm the underlying cause before recommending replacement so you're not paying for parts that weren't the problem.

Authorised diesel agents

Authorised by Bosch, Delphi and Garrett, with factory training and manufacturer-spec scan tools that can actually talk to the DPF control module.

Soot load measured, not guessed

We read soot load percentage, ash load and differential pressure across the filter. A DPF warning isn't always a blocked DPF, and a clean DPF on a faulty sensor wastes your money.

Full emissions picture

DPF problems are often caused by EGR carbon build-up, leaking injectors or boost-system faults over-soiling the filter. We look at the whole system instead of just resetting the light.

Twenty years on Kahikatea Drive

Diesel emissions work has been our specialty since 2003. Same workshop, same team, same standards.

How It Works

Simple, transparent process

  1. 01

    Scan and pressure test

We pull DPF, EGR and engine fault codes, log soot and ash load, and read differential pressure across the filter under load to confirm whether the DPF or a sensor is the actual fault.

  2. 02

    Diagnose the cause

Short-trip driving, EGR carbon, injector over-fuelling and boost leaks can all clog a DPF. We isolate which one is driving the soot load on your vehicle before quoting the fix.

  3. 03

    Forced regeneration

With the engine at correct operating temperature, the regeneration cycle is triggered through the scan tool. The DPF reaches burn-off temperature and the trapped soot is converted to ash.

  4. 04

    Off-vehicle clean if needed

Where ash has built past the point a forced regen can recover, the DPF comes off for deeper cleaning, or we source a genuine replacement through authorised supply channels.

  5. 05

    Verify and advise

Post-service scan confirms soot load has dropped, fault codes are cleared, and a road test verifies regeneration cycles are running normally. You leave with a written report.

Everything you should know about dpf cleaning & regeneration

A workshop perspective on what's involved, how we run the job, and what shapes the final cost.

Why DPF cleaning in Hamilton needs a proper diagnosis

A Diesel Particulate Filter doesn't fail randomly. It blocks because something in the way the vehicle is used, or in the wider emissions system, is producing more soot than the regeneration cycle can burn off. School-run utes that never see motorway speed, short fleet runs and stop-start city driving all push a DPF toward the warning light long before it should fail. So does a leaking injector, a sticking EGR valve, or a tired turbo dropping exhaust temperature.

Just clearing the soot without finding the underlying cause means the warning is back inside weeks. This is most common on:

  • Hilux, Ranger, BT-50, D-Max and Triton utes
  • Prado and Pajero SUVs
  • Motorhome Sprinters and Hiace vans

All are common-rail platforms where the DPF is tightly coupled to injection, EGR and turbo behaviour.

What our DPF cleaning work covers

The diagnostic starts with manufacturer-level scan tools pulling live data on soot load percentage, ash load, exhaust gas temperatures and differential pressure across the filter. We log this under load on a short road test, because a DPF that looks fine at idle can read very differently once the engine is producing actual exhaust flow.

If the filter is genuinely loaded, a forced regeneration is run through the scan tool with the engine held at correct operating temperature. The cycle takes the DPF up to burn-off temperature, converts the trapped soot to ash, and resets the soot-load counter in the ECM.

Where ash has built past the point a forced regen can recover, the filter comes off the vehicle for off-car deep cleaning: flushed and back-flushed to remove ash without damaging the ceramic substrate.

The same diagnostic process catches the wider faults that over-load DPFs in the first place:

  • EGR valves clogged with carbon
  • Leaking injectors dumping excess fuel
  • Boost-side leaks dropping combustion temperature
  • Differential pressure sensors reporting incorrectly

Where parts are needed, including pressure sensors, gaskets or replacement DPFs, we source through authorised Bosch and Delphi channels with genuine and remanufactured options. After the work, we re-run the scan, road-test the vehicle, and confirm regeneration cycles are completing normally before it leaves.

How a DPF job works at our Frankton workshop

You phone (07) 847 3339 with the symptoms: DPF light on, loss of power, limp mode, regeneration cycles that never finish. We book the vehicle in for a diagnostic slot, usually one to two hours.

On the day, the scan tool comes out first, fault codes and freeze-frame data come up, and a short road test logs soot load, ash load and differential pressure under real driving conditions. If a forced regeneration is the right next step, we confirm with you, bring the engine up to operating temperature, and run the cycle through the diagnostic tool.

If the readings suggest the cause is upstream, a stuck EGR, a leaking injector, a boost leak, we surface that before any regen runs. Clearing soot without fixing the underlying cause is only a short-term win. Where the filter needs to come off for off-vehicle cleaning or replacement, that is booked separately. Either way, you collect with a written report showing soot load before and after, fault codes cleared, and what we recommend to keep it clear.

What affects the cost

DPF work has more cost variables than most jobs, so we quote each one specifically:

  • Severity - a filter caught early with moderate soot load is a different job from one driven into limp mode for weeks where ash has built and the regen system is no longer responding
  • Cleaning path - forced regeneration on the scan tool is the most economical; off-vehicle cleaning costs more because the filter has to come off; replacement depends entirely on which platform you drive
  • Parts grade - genuine versus remanufactured DPF supply; we will tell you which path makes sense for your vehicle
  • Upstream repairs - a failed differential pressure sensor, EGR carbon, or an injector issue are quoted separately with an explanation of why fixing them protects the DPF investment
  • Diagnostic time - clear codes and steady live data take an hour; intermittent faults across multiple systems take longer

Hamilton and Waikato coverage

Our workshop sits on Kahikatea Drive in Frankton, three minutes from the Hamilton ring road. Most of our DPF work comes from across the wider Waikato: utes and motorhomes from Cambridge and Te Awamutu, fleet vans from Morrinsville and Huntly, agricultural diesels from Ngaruawahia and out toward Raglan.

Most jobs are turned around within a working day. Where a DPF needs off-vehicle cleaning or replacement, we will confirm the timing at the diagnostic stage so there are no surprises. The workshop is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

FAQs

Common Questions

Everything you might want to know before booking.

How long does a forced DPF regeneration take?

A forced regeneration through the diagnostic tool typically takes 30 to 60 minutes once the engine is at operating temperature. We then run a short road test at motorway speed to confirm the cycle completes naturally. The full appointment, diagnostic scan, regen, verification, paperwork, is usually a half-day at our Frankton workshop.

What's the difference between passive, active and forced DPF regeneration?

Passive regeneration happens automatically during long, hot motorway driving, the exhaust is hot enough to burn soot off without help. Active regeneration is triggered by the ECM, which injects a small amount of extra fuel to raise exhaust temperature. Forced regeneration is what we run on the scan tool when active regen can no longer complete on its own.

Can a blocked DPF be cleaned without removing it?

Yes, in most cases. A forced regeneration runs the filter through a full burn-off cycle while it stays on the vehicle. Off-vehicle cleaning is reserved for filters where ash load has built past what regeneration can recover, or where the soot has hardened into a glaze that no longer responds to heat.

What causes a DPF to block?

The most common cause is short-trip, low-speed driving, the exhaust never gets hot enough for passive regen. Beyond that, leaking injectors over-fuel and produce excess soot, EGR carbon build-up changes combustion, boost leaks and turbo problems drop exhaust temperature, and the wrong engine oil grade leaves more ash behind. We check all of these as part of the diagnostic.

Will driving on the motorway clear my DPF?

If the soot load is moderate and the regen system is still working, a sustained drive at motorway speed for 20 to 30 minutes can let the ECM complete an active regeneration. If the DPF light is already on, or the vehicle is in limp mode, that window has usually passed and a forced regen on the scan tool is the next step. Pushing through a blocked DPF risks turbo damage.

Can a blocked DPF damage my turbo?

Yes. A blocked DPF raises exhaust back pressure, which forces the turbo to work against resistance it wasn't designed for. Over time this damages turbine seals and bearings. If you've been driving with a DPF warning for any length of time, we check turbo shaft play and oil seal condition as part of the inspection.

What are the warning signs of a blocked DPF?

Dashboard DPF or engine warning light, noticeable loss of power, limp mode, increased fuel consumption, a hot or unusual smell from the exhaust, and active regeneration cycles that seem to run constantly without ever finishing. Any of these on a modern diesel are worth a scan before they escalate.

Is DPF cleaning worth it or should I replace?

Cleaning is almost always worth trying first. A forced regeneration is a fraction of the cost of replacement and recovers most filters that haven't been driven hard with an active warning. Replacement is only justified where the filter substrate is cracked, melted, or saturated with ash beyond what a deep clean can remove.

Can you delete a DPF in New Zealand?

No. Removing or disabling a DPF on a road-registered vehicle is illegal in New Zealand, it fails WOF, breaches the emissions provisions of the Land Transport Rule, and can void insurance. We don't do DPF deletes. Cleaning and proper diagnosis is the legal path, and it works for the vast majority of blocked filters we see.

How often should a DPF be cleaned?

If the vehicle gets regular motorway driving, the DPF should self-clean for its natural service life. For vehicles used mostly for short trips around Hamilton, plan on a diagnostic check every 60,000 to 80,000 kilometres or whenever a warning appears. Fleet vehicles and short-trip utes often need attention sooner.

Will limp mode go away after DPF cleaning?

If limp mode was triggered by DPF soot load, yes, once the regeneration completes and fault codes are cleared, the engine returns to normal operation. If limp mode is being driven by a separate fault, a failed pressure sensor, a stuck EGR, an injector issue, we'll surface that during the scan and quote the actual repair instead of letting you pay for a regen that won't fix it.

Do you offer WINZ-approved quotes on DPF repairs?

Yes. We are a WINZ-approved workshop and can provide formal written quotes you can submit to Work and Income if a major DPF or related emissions repair is creating financial pressure. Call (07) 847 3339 and we'll put the quote together with you.
