Why Holden owners come to us

Photos from the floor on Kahikatea Drive. Same team, same hoists, same standards every job.

  • Colorado 2.8 Duramax DPF and EGR blockages The 2.8L Duramax is a strong diesel, but stop-start work blocks the DPF and clogs the EGR valve, dropping the ute into limp mode. We run forced regenerations, clean the EGR system, and replace components where needed.
  • Commodore V6 timing chain stretch The 3.6L V6 (LFX and LLT) is known for timing chain stretch, often heard as a rattle on cold start. We diagnose with the right scan tool, measure the stretch, and replace the chain, guides and tensioner as one proper job.
  • LS V8 oil and coolant maintenance The LS V8s in late Commodores are tough engines, but they reward correct servicing. We use the right specification oil and coolant and keep the cooling system in good shape so the engine lasts.

Common Holden issues we see

The patterns we have noticed across Hamilton Holden owners, and how we handle them.

Colorado 2.8 Duramax DPF and EGR blockages

The 2.8L Duramax is a strong diesel, but stop-start work blocks the DPF and clogs the EGR valve, dropping the ute into limp mode. We run forced regenerations, clean the EGR system, and replace components where needed.

Commodore V6 timing chain stretch

The 3.6L V6 (LFX and LLT) is known for timing chain stretch, often heard as a rattle on cold start. We diagnose with the right scan tool, measure the stretch, and replace the chain, guides and tensioner as one proper job.

LS V8 oil and coolant maintenance

The LS V8s in late Commodores are tough engines, but they reward correct servicing. We use the right specification oil and coolant and keep the cooling system in good shape so the engine lasts.

Captiva automatic transmission faults

Captiva automatics develop hard shifts and slipping as the fluid ages and mileage climbs. We assess fluid condition and recommend a service or repair before the gearbox gives up entirely.

Colorado Garrett turbo wear

The Duramax turbo can develop bearing wear, oil leaks or actuator faults that cost you boost and power. We test it under load and rebuild or replace it rather than guessing.

Parts availability since the brand closed

Some Holden parts are getting harder to find. We source through aftermarket, used and GM contact networks, and we will always be honest if a part is going to take time or cost more than it once did.

More about Holden servicing in Hamilton

A workshop perspective on what's involved, how we run the job, and what shapes the final cost.

Why Hamilton Holden owners come to Turbo & Diesel

Holden ended in 2020, but Commodores, Colorados and Captivas are still everywhere across the Waikato. We know these cars, service them every week, and are straight with you about parts. The Colorado 2.8 Duramax runs common-rail diesel injection, and as authorised Bosch and Delphi agents with our own fuel injection test room we diagnose and repair it properly, not just read a code and guess.

The Commodore V6 timing chain, the LS V8 maintenance, the Captiva auto, these are known quantities to us. When a part is genuinely getting scarce, we tell you before we quote, not after.

Holden servicing and repairs we handle

Colorado diesel work gets the same fuel injection test room treatment as the Ford Ranger:

  • DPF blockages: proper scan, forced regeneration, clean or replacement where needed
  • Clogged EGR valves: cleaned or replaced
  • Worn injectors: bench-tested for flow and back-leak against Bosch and Delphi spec, rebuilt or replaced with remanufactured units
  • Garrett turbo on the Duramax: tested under load, repaired or replaced when bearings, seals or actuator are at fault

Petrol and broader work:

  • Commodore V6 (LF1, LFX, LLT) timing chain stretch: diagnosed, measured, replaced as a complete chain, guide and tensioner job
  • LS V8: correct-specification oil and coolant, cooling system maintained
  • Captiva, Trax, Astra, Cruze, Barina: full scheduled servicing, brakes, suspension, steering, air conditioning and WOF inspections
How we service your Holden

Call (07) 847 3339 with the symptoms: a timing chain rattle, a DPF light on the Colorado, a slipping Captiva auto, or a service due. On the day, diagnosis comes first. For the Colorado that means a manufacturer-level scan and a road test logging live data under load. For a Commodore chain concern we measure the stretch rather than assume it.

We agree the work with you before we proceed. For any non-routine parts, we confirm the supply route so there are no surprises. The car is repaired, road-tested, and handed back with a clear written report.

What Holden servicing costs

A standard logbook service is a predictable job. Repairs vary, and with Holden there is one extra factor: parts availability. Most servicing parts are well supplied, but some components take longer to source or cost more than they once did. We tell you that before you commit, not after. Key cost factors:

  • Severity: a timing chain caught early is far less than one left to damage the engine
  • Component outcome: turbo or DPF repair vs. replacement moves the figure
  • Diagnostic time: depends on how clear the symptoms are

Holden servicing across Hamilton and the Waikato

Our workshop and fuel injection test room are on Kahikatea Drive in Frankton, a short run from the Hamilton ring road. Holden work comes to us from across the Waikato:

  • Older Holdens from Huntly, Ngaruawahia and out toward Raglan

We are open Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

FAQs

Common Questions

Everything you might want to know before booking.

Has Holden gone out of business?

Yes. General Motors retired the Holden brand in 2020 and stopped building right-hand drive vehicles, so Holden is no longer a going concern. The reassuring part is that the cars have not gone anywhere. Commodores, Colorados and Captivas are still everywhere in the Waikato, parts are still sourceable, and we service them every week.

Can I still get my Holden serviced now that the brand has gone?

Yes. We service Holdens the same as any other make, Commodore, Colorado, Captiva, Trax, Astra and the rest. The brand has gone but the cars have not, and parts are still sourceable for almost everything. Most servicing parts are straightforward, and we will be upfront on anything that is harder to find.

How much does it cost to service a Holden Commodore?

We do not publish a set price because it depends on the engine, whether it is a V6 or LS V8, the parts and fluids the car is due, and anything we find on inspection. A routine service is predictable, while a timing chain or diesel job costs more. Call (07) 847 3339 with your Commodore details for a quote.

What is a good price for a full service?

A good price is one that covers a genuine full service, oil and filters, a full inspection, brakes, fluids and a road test, with no padding. We quote each Holden specifically by model and engine, and we tell you the parts route before we start, which matters more on a discontinued brand. Call (07) 847 3339 for a quote.

How do I spot a dishonest mechanic?

Warning signs are vague quotes, parts replaced without explanation, no written report, and pressure to authorise work on the spot. An honest workshop diagnoses the fault, shows you what is worn, agrees the work and cost before starting, and gives you a clear written rundown. We work that way, and we are MTA-aligned, so the standard is checkable.

Are Holden parts still available in New Zealand?

For routine servicing, yes. Filters, brakes, belts, fluids and most common mechanical parts are well supplied through aftermarket networks. Some trim, body and electronic parts are harder than they used to be. We source through aftermarket, used and GM contact channels, and we tell you the parts route before we quote a job.

Do you work on the Colorado 2.8 Duramax diesel?

Yes. DPF cleaning, forced regeneration, EGR service, injection work and turbo repair on the Colorado are all regular jobs here. As authorised Bosch and Delphi agents we have the fuel injection test room and calibrated test benches to diagnose and repair common-rail diesel faults properly.

My Commodore has a timing chain rattle on cold start, what now?

That rattle is usually the well-known LFX or LLT timing chain stretch. We diagnose it properly, measure the stretch with a scan tool, and quote a full chain, guide and tensioner replacement. It is a job worth doing once and doing right, because a stretched chain left too long can damage the engine.

Does servicing here void my Holden warranty?

No. Where a Holden still carries any remaining warranty or extended cover, New Zealand consumer law lets you have it serviced at any qualified workshop using the correct parts and procedures. We are an MTA-aligned workshop and service to Holden schedules, so your cover stays intact.

What is the most reliable Holden engine?

The LS V8 in the later Commodores is regarded as one of the toughest engines Holden fitted, and the 2.8 Duramax diesel in the Colorado is a strong, hard-working unit. Both reward correct servicing. The 3.6L V6 is capable too, as long as the timing chain is kept on top of.

Why is my Colorado DPF blocking?

A DPF needs sustained driving to reach the temperature that burns off soot. If your Colorado mostly does short trips it never completes a regeneration, so the filter clogs and the ute drops into limp mode. We can clean or regenerate it, and we will talk through the driving and servicing changes that keep it clear.

Will my Commodore or Colorado still pass a WOF?

Yes, we carry out Holden WOF inspections regularly. The common issues on older ones are suspension wear, brake condition and tyre wear from heavy use. If something needs attention to pass we can usually fix it the same visit, and we flag anything that will need work soon.
