Everything you should know about WOF inspection
A workshop perspective on what's involved, how we run the job, and what shapes the final cost.
Why get your WOF done at a repair workshop?
Plenty of Hamilton drivers get their WOF somewhere that only inspects, then have to book a second visit somewhere else when an item fails. We inspect and repair in the same building, so the inspection and any fixes flow into one visit. That matters when you only have one vehicle and a working day already spoken for.
Our workshop is on Kahikatea Drive in Frankton, two minutes from the Hamilton ring road. The team is the same people you spoke to last year, and that continuity is half of why a workshop earns the relationship.
A Warrant of Fitness is a legal requirement for almost every vehicle on New Zealand roads, and the standards are set nationally by NZTA, so the checklist is the same in Hamilton as it is anywhere else in the country. Where a good local workshop earns its keep is in what happens after the inspection. The most common WOF failures we see are worn tyres below the 1.5 mm tread limit, blown or hazy headlights and indicators, split wiper blades, perished suspension bushes and brake components past their wear limit. Our guide to what fails a WOF in NZ goes through each one and how to spot it before your inspection. Because we quote and rectify those items in-house, a fail does not turn into a week of chasing a second booking somewhere else.
What our WOF inspection covers
The WOF inspection follows the NZTA Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual on every job:
- Tyres and wheels, brakes, structure and corrosion
- Lights and indicators, glazing, wipers and washers
- Doors, seatbelts and airbags
- Steering and suspension
- Exhaust integrity, visible smoke and the fuel system
- Speedometer and horn
NZTA has also announced that from 1 November 2026 a WOF will check that no warning or malfunction lights are showing for Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Keep Assist, on vehicles that have them.
We use calibrated equipment for brake testing, headlight aim and exhaust inspection, and photograph anything we flag so the report has evidence rather than just a tick-box.
If your vehicle is due a service as well, we can do it in the same visit. A service is a different job from a WOF: oil and filters, fluids, a wheels-off brake check and a fault-code scan. Our car service page sets out what is included.
WOF rules worth knowing
How often you need a WOF depends on your vehicle's age and when it was first registered, and NZTA has announced changes to inspection frequency for light vehicles starting from 1 November 2026. The date your current WOF runs out is on the label on your windscreen. If that date has passed, our guide on what to do when your WOF has expired covers the rules and the risks of driving on it.
If your vehicle fails, NZTA's rules say a recheck within 28 days at the same inspecting organisation carries no extra fee. After that, a fee applies and a full new inspection is needed. The 28 days are about fees, not driving: a vehicle whose WOF has expired should only be driven to get it fixed or inspected, and only if it is safe, so book the repair early. NZTA's website has the current rules for your vehicle.
How a WOF visit works at our Frankton workshop
Phone (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form to lock in a morning drop-off. Pure WOF jobs are usually about an hour; a combined service and WOF needs a half-day or full-day slot.
On the day, you hand over the key at reception and we run through the work scope before you leave. The vehicle goes onto a hoist and the WOF inspection runs through the NZTA criteria, along with any service items you have booked. If we find something that needs your call (a worn front pad, a perished wiper, a slow exhaust leak) we ring you with the fix and a quote. Nothing extra happens until you sign off. When the work is done, the vehicle is road-tested and you collect with a written report. We give you a realistic timeframe for collection when you book.
How to book a WOF in Hamilton
The quickest way to book a WOF is to call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form, and we will lock in a morning drop-off that suits you. WOF-only jobs are short, so call to check availability; a combined WOF and service is best booked a few days ahead so we can set aside a long enough slot for both. Tell us the make, model and year when you book a WOF with us, so the right technician is on the job and any likely parts are ready before your vehicle arrives.
If you run a business fleet out of Hamilton, we can hold the keys for an overnight drop and have the WOF and any repairs sorted before your team is back on the road. Either way, you get a written report at pickup covering what passed, what needs attention and what to plan in next.
What affects the cost of a WOF and any repairs
We do not publish a set WOF price, and we quote before we start. The inspection is quoted first, and any repair a fail throws up is quoted separately for your sign-off, so there are no buried surcharges. What a visit comes to depends on a few honest factors:
- Your vehicle: the type of vehicle and what it needs inspected
- Fail items: parts dominate on brake discs and exhaust components; labour dominates on wiper arms and seatbelt retractors
- Access: larger engines and tighter engine bays take more labour time to reach some components
- A service in the same visit: if you add one, it is quoted against your vehicle's service schedule
For a free quote, call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form. If budget is tight, we are WINZ-approved and can provide a free written quote for Work and Income.
Hamilton and Waikato coverage
Our Frankton workshop is on Kahikatea Drive, three minutes from the Hamilton ring road, with easy access from Hillcrest, Rototuna, Te Rapa and Chartwell. Customers also come from Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Morrinsville, Huntly, Ngaruawahia and Raglan, many timing a WOF with a trip into town so both are done in one run. A quick WOF-only job is short, and if you would rather drop and collect, morning drop-offs give us the day to sort any repairs a fail throws up.
If your business runs a fleet of utes or vans out of Hamilton, we can hold the keys for an overnight drop and have the work ready for collection. For private customers we are open Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, and bookings the night before by phone work well for early morning starts.

Common Questions
Everything you might want to know before booking.
How much does a WOF cost in Hamilton?
We do not publish a set WOF price. What you pay depends on your vehicle and on whether anything needs fixing after the inspection, and any repair is quoted separately for your approval before we start. Call (07) 847 3339 for a free quote.
Can I book a WOF at your Frankton workshop?
Yes. To book a WOF, call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form to lock in a morning drop-off. WOF-only jobs are short, so call to check availability, while a combined service and WOF is best booked a few days ahead so we can allocate a long enough slot and the right technician.
How long does a WOF take?
A WOF inspection on a passenger vehicle is usually 30 to 60 minutes. If you have booked a full vehicle service at the same visit, expect a half-day to a full day depending on the scope. Drop-off in the morning is the most common pattern.
How often do I need a WOF in NZ?
It depends on your vehicle's age and when it was first registered, and NZTA has announced changes for light vehicles from 1 November 2026. Your due date is on the label on your windscreen, and our guide on what to do if your WOF has expired explains the rules, with NZTA's website the place to confirm the current ones.
What happens if my vehicle fails the WOF?
We give you a written list of the fail items and quote the repair, and once you approve, most can be fixed in the same visit. Our guide to what fails a WOF in NZ covers the common fails and what you can and cannot do with the vehicle in the meantime.
What is the 28-day rule for a WOF?
Under NZTA's rules, a recheck within 28 days of the failed inspection at the same inspecting organisation carries no extra fee, and after that a new full inspection is needed. The 28 days are about fees, not extra driving time. Our guide to what fails a WOF in NZ explains the recheck rules in full.
What payment options do you offer for a WOF?
We do not advertise a set payment-plan scheme, so if spreading the cost matters to you, call (07) 847 3339 and ask what options apply to your job when you book. We are also WINZ-approved and can provide written quotes for Work and Income assistance.
What is checked in a WOF?
The WOF follows the NZTA Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual and covers tyres and wheels, brakes, structure and corrosion, lights, glazing, wipers and washers, doors, seatbelts, airbags, steering, suspension, the exhaust (including visible smoke), the fuel system and the speedometer. Our guide to what fails a WOF in NZ goes through the items that fail most often.
Can you do my service and WOF in the same visit?
Yes, and it is the most efficient way to handle both. Drop the vehicle off in the morning, we run the service plus the WOF inspection together, and you collect later that day with a single report. Book by phone so we can allocate a long enough slot.
What is the difference between a WOF and a service?
A WOF is a compliance inspection, does the vehicle meet the legal road-safety standard. A service is preventative maintenance, we change oil and filters, top fluids, inspect wear items, and scan for faults so problems do not turn into breakdowns. The two cover different things and most drivers do both each year.
What vehicles do you do WOFs on?
We inspect and repair petrol and diesel cars, utes and vans, from small passenger runabouts to light commercials, and our technicians work to the manufacturer specifications for each vehicle when a fail item needs fixing. We do not work on hybrid or electric vehicles, so tell us the make and model when you book.
Can you handle fleet servicing for our business?
Yes. We service light commercial fleets across the Waikato, utes, vans, light trucks and small buses, with per-vehicle service logs, scheduled compliance dates, and monthly reporting. Call to discuss a service plan that fits your fleet size.
Do you offer WINZ-approved quotes?
Yes. We are a WINZ-approved workshop and can provide formal written quotes you can submit to Work and Income for help with WOF fail repairs or servicing costs. Call (07) 847 3339 and we will prepare the quote you need.
